The award winning radio soap Huntsford is coming to The Sound of Sunday.

The drama, which is made and produced by Huntingdon Community Radio, is being made available to hospital radio stations, and The Sound of Sunday will start broadcasting it on 30 May.

The award winning soap drama is set in a small market town called Huntsford in the middle of the English countryside. Huntsford lives in a fictitious, parallel universe version of our world. Whilst it picks up on current themes and issues, it also provides an escape from the here and now. For this reason it is a Covid-free zone.

The drama is built by a team of over 30 volunteers from all walks of life, ranging in age from 20 to 70+. The Huntsford team comprises two recording engineers, a producer/director, four scriptwriters and 25 actors. The team is now on Season Five, so is experienced in producing material to the exacting schedule required by a radio soap.  The Sound of Sunday will start from episode 1.

Enthusiasm and commitment are useful weapons in the armoury. Normally the episodes are recorded in the studio, but throughout the pandemic Huntsford has been recorded remotely via Zoom. As ever, the more experienced actors motivate, coach, and encourage the newcomers.

Will Bob ever commit to Judy? And what do you make of Alastair? There’s plenty of material to sustain the Huntsford community for many years to come.

The Huntsford cast is made up of dozens of volunteers who live and breathe drama, and more specifically – love audio!  Huntsford can be heard every week on the show on HRB and on The Sound of Sunday Extra Time podcast and kicks off with 2 introduction episodes on 30 May.

Superman 1940s Style: The Mystery of the Dragon’s Teeth Part 2

Extra Time is back – but this time it’s gone online.

The new show will be available at 4pm each week with extra features from the show plus an episode of Superman 1940s Style.

It’s the perfect addition to the weekly show and will also allow for some additional memories from the archive too.

The show will be available from the show’s website at http://www.soundofsunday.co.uk/extra-time from 4pm each week starting 16 May.

On 22 February 2009, The Sound of Sunday started playing the original 1940s episodes of The Adventures of Superman.  The first episode, The Baby From Krypton, was originally broadcast in America on February 12 1940.

There have been breaks in that time, but this Sunday, 12 years later, the last episode that will be used on the show will be broadcast.

The reason that it won’t be heard anymore is that as they have got newer, the audio quality of the episodes has gone down.  It’s also always good to try new things and we have two new features lined up to start in a couple of weeks time.

However it’s not the end for the world’s most well known superhero.  The series will end with a double bill – episodes 1245 and 1246 but there are still several hundred more to go and you can go on listening to them via our website.

It was 24 March 1991 at 3pm when The Sound of Sunday started and this weekend the show will celebrate 30 years on the air.

Everything will start at 1pm with half an hour of birthday greetings from friends in hospital radio and beyond, who will also choose their favourite song from the last 30 years.

The birthday greetings will continue from 1.30 along with some highlights and memories of the show since 1991.

All the regular features will be there too including the only feature that has been there since the start – Soap Update.

The Sound of Sunday Big 30th Birthday Show – Sunday 21 March from 1pm

It started off as a 3 hour celebration of 30 years of Saturday morning TV on 2 October 2006.  Guests that afternoon on a special edition of The Sound of Sunday included Maggie Philbin, Trev and Simon and Mitch Johnson.  But over the next ten years, the show went on to interview numerous more people who had been involved in Saturday morning TV – right up to the 40th anniversary in 2016.

All the guests took part in the Saturday Morning TV Super Quiz, 5 or 6 questions about their era of Saturday morning TV.  Those who took part included Mark Rhodes, Keith Chegwin, Ortis Deley and even Basil Brush.  We even had the boss of Saturday morning TV for 30 years Chris Bellinger.

3 people though got 100% – Mike Read, Andi Peters and Trev Neal, and all were given a certificate and HRB mug as their prize.  Andi was sent his by post, Basil Brush presented Mike with his whilst they were in panto together, and we presented Trev with his prize in front of an audience at the Leicester Square theatre in London.

This Sunday, on The Sound of Sunday Extra Time, you can hear some of those who took part again and Mike and Trev receive their prizes.

The Sound of Sunday Extra Time – Sunday 14 March at 4pm

In 2019, we had many phone calls over the course of a week from a patient on F Floor called John.  He eventually explained why he chose the songs that he did – he’d worked with the artists involved.  He invited us up to talk to him and the resultant 30 minute programme was later entered into the National Hospital Radio Awards where it was nominated in the Best Speech Package category.

The Sound of Sunday has staged many outside broadcasts over the years.  This Sunday’s Extra Time remembers two of them.

Firstly the day back in 1992 of the Staff Fun Day, held on the playing fields outside the then Park Prewett hospital.   Other HRB presenters of the time joined in our coverage and you can hear about 10 minutes of that on this weekend’s show.

Then there was the show we did live from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2016.  We went live to the main venues around the park, ending up at the top of the Orbit with a spectacular view of London.
