Getting Ready for The Big Broadcast
On 29 April, Richard Smith and his team will once again go live across a network of hospital radio stations around the UK. Previous Big Broadcasts have run for around 24 hours on New Year's Eve. This year, the show will be on air for 48 hours during the spring bank holiday weekend.
There will be a whole range of shows broadcast as part of the event including live music and special guests, and as part of the event, some of the particpating statiosn have been invited to broadcast an hour live from their own studios.
Therefore, The Sound of Sunday will be live at 2pm on Sunday 30 April on over 30 stations around the UK. The show will be an hour of eighties music and will also feature the weekly Sainsbury's draw.
More details about the show will be announced in the next few weeks, but get ready for the BIGGEST Big Broadcast ever, live from 6pm on 29 April.
We LOVE Phone calls
The phone has always played an important part on the show – we have a phone in competition every week and of course we ask for requests by phone too.
The last couple of weeks though, the phones seem to go crazy both on The ASound of Sunday and on HRB in general. Nearly 30 reauests were phoned in over a period of two days – and that just makes it worth while knowing that we have listeners who are tuning in and taking part in the show.
So please call HRB during any Music on Demand show. We like phone calls and we like getting requests via phone calls.
Pick up your bedside phone and press the HOSPITAL RADIO button on the screen – and it's free.
See you on Sunday!

Getting Ready for Another BIG Christmas Show
It's that time of the year again – the time when The Sound of Sunday puts together its biggest show of the year.
The "Big Christmas Show" as it is called has been running in one form or another since 1996 although it was 1997 when we believe the Christmas Cracker Dash was first part of the show. It has definitely been there every Christmas since 2001 and is now the traditional start of the HRB Christmas schedules.
The first local panto guest was Keith Chegwin in 1998, and our connection to The Anvil in Basingstoke continues to this day with at least one member of the Sleeping Beauty cast joining us on the show this year.
Back in 1997, the crackers were taken round by just one person (then HRB presenter Katheryn Evans). This year we have a team of 5 and it is the centrepiece of what will be a five and a half hour show. This year for the first time, we have requests for the residents of Basingfield Court Care Home in Old Basing during the final hour of the show.
Something else that has been part opf the show for many years is the competition where a member of staff can win a family ticket to see the Anvil's Christmas panto – and that will be no different this year.
The number of special guests in each show has increased enourmously over the years and the show has taken on an identity of its own over the last few years. The 2013 show was 6 hours of the most intsense live radio I have ever done but it was also some of the most fun radio I've ever done because it involved so many factors that all came together at the right time and in the right way. We never know quite how many crackers we're going to pull because that depends on the number of people in hospital. One year I'm sure it will be very quiet!
So at 12pm on 11 December, with special guests, competitions and loads of crackers, we will once again present the ASound of Sunday Big Christmas Show, for the 19th time, and officially launch the Christmas schedule on HRB.
Sound of Sunday 9 October – Guest Mike Read
Never say never! The intention with the series of shows about Saturday morning Tv that is on air all this week on HRB was always that they would bring the sequence of guests to do with Saturday morning Tv to an end. We've being doing it for 10 years so it seemed the logical time to move on – maybe until the 50th aniversary!
There was still one thing to clear uyp though – the winners of the Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz which has been running with all our guests for the last 10 years. We played out all those who took part in one of our specials last Saturday morning including Trev Neal getting his prize at the Leicester Square Theatre earlier int he year. Andi Peters has been sent his mug and certificate, which leaves Mike Read to get his – which will be this Sunday, sort of.
Mike will join us on the phone to talk about his new TV show Tin Pan Alley. We'll also officially declare him one of the 3 winners of the quiz and he will be choosing this weekend's Sainsbury's winner.
The Sound of Sunday live from 1.30 this Sunday on HRB.
It Started with Swap Shop…
Exactly 40 years ago Saturday morning TV changed forever when Multi Coloured Swap Shop went on the air for the first time. It, and the shows that followed it over the following 30+ years shaped many aspects of TV and influenced many who went on to work in TV and radio.
This Sunday, The Sound of Sunday will be marking the anniversary with a special programme featuring clips from the programmes and those who have taken part including Maggie Philbin, Keith Chegwin, Trev and Simon, Ortis Deley, Mitch Johnson, Basil Brish, Mark Rhodes and Andi Peters.
Join us for a trip down memory lane with plenty of nostalgia and memories in a Sound of Sunday special, Sunday at 3pm.
The programme will be part of a week of special editions of The Sound of Sunday starting on Friday 5.25 and continuing on Saturday morning as the stars of Saturday morning TV take part in the Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz.

Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz Comes to an End
For the last 10 years, the stars of Saturday morning TV have been taking part on The Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning Tv SuperQuiz, with Live and Kicking's Andi Peters the final person to take part last weekend.
Those who have taken part include Maggie Philbin, Trev and Simon, Keith Chegwin, Mike Read, Noel Edmonds and Basil Brush. 3 people got every single question correct and were therefore presented with a certificate and HRB mug.
Presenter Neil Ogden caught up with Trev Neal at the Leicester Square Theatre in London to give him his certificate.
You can hear everyone taking part in a special compilation show this Saturday morning at 11am.
